Understanding IELTS Writing Task 2
Writing Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1 in your overall Writing band score. You have 40 minutes to write at least 250 words on a given topic. The examiner scores you on four criteria: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
Most candidates struggle not because they lack ideas, but because they lack structure. A well-organised essay with clear arguments will always score higher than a disorganised essay with brilliant vocabulary.
The Four Main Essay Types
Every IELTS Task 2 question falls into one of these categories:
- Opinion (Agree/Disagree): "To what extent do you agree or disagree?"
- Discussion (Both Views): "Discuss both views and give your opinion."
- Advantages & Disadvantages: "What are the advantages and disadvantages?"
- Problem & Solution: "What are the problems and what solutions can you suggest?"
Identifying the question type is your first step. Get this wrong, and you'll lose marks on Task Response immediately.
The Universal 4-Paragraph Structure
Regardless of question type, use this structure:
- Paragraph 1 — Introduction (2-3 sentences): Paraphrase the question + state your position/thesis
- Paragraph 2 — Body 1 (5-7 sentences): Main argument with explanation and example
- Paragraph 3 — Body 2 (5-7 sentences): Second argument or counterpoint with explanation and example
- Paragraph 4 — Conclusion (2-3 sentences): Summarise your position (never introduce new ideas)
Writing a Strong Introduction
Your introduction should do two things: paraphrase the topic and state your position. Never copy the question word-for-word.
Question: "Some people believe that universities should focus on preparing students for employment. Others think the purpose of university is to provide academic knowledge. Discuss both views and give your opinion."
Weak intro: "Some people believe that universities should focus on preparing students for employment. Others think the purpose of university is to provide academic knowledge."
Strong intro: "There is an ongoing debate about whether higher education should primarily serve as vocational training or as a platform for intellectual development. While both perspectives have merit, I believe universities should strike a balance between practical skills and academic inquiry."
Body Paragraphs: The PEEL Method
Each body paragraph should follow the PEEL structure:
- Point — State your main idea clearly in one sentence
- Explain — Elaborate on why this point is valid
- Example — Provide a specific example or evidence
- Link — Connect back to the question or transition to the next point
This structure ensures every paragraph is focused and coherent, which directly improves your Coherence & Cohesion score.
Common Mistakes That Drop Your Score
- Under 250 words: Automatic penalty. Aim for 270-300 words
- No clear position: The examiner must know your opinion by the end of paragraph 1
- Memorised phrases: Examiners can spot templated language. Use natural linking words
- One long paragraph: Always use 4 clearly separated paragraphs
- New ideas in conclusion: Only summarise what you've already discussed
Essential Linking Words for Band 7+
Replace basic connectors with more sophisticated alternatives:
- Instead of "Also" → "Furthermore," "Moreover," "In addition"
- Instead of "But" → "However," "Nevertheless," "Conversely"
- Instead of "Because" → "This is primarily due to," "Owing to the fact that"
- Instead of "In conclusion" → "In light of the arguments presented," "Taking everything into account"
The difference between Band 6 and Band 7 in Writing is rarely about ideas. It's about how clearly and cohesively you present those ideas.
Your Daily Writing Practice Plan
- Day 1-2: Practice writing introductions only (10 different questions)
- Day 3-4: Practice body paragraphs using PEEL (focus on one paragraph at a time)
- Day 5: Write a full timed essay (40 minutes, no dictionary)
- Day 6: Review your essay against the band descriptors. Mark your own work
- Day 7: Rewrite the same essay incorporating improvements
Repeat this cycle weekly. Within 4 weeks, your essay structure will become second nature.
